Finding Emergency Shelter Fast

If there is a tornado or hurricane headed toward your home, leave immediately and find emergency shelter elsewhere.

Even manufactured homes equipped with the latest tie-downs can be blown away by heavy winds. Do not take shelter in a crawl space or under your manufactured home. A tornado could lift the home up and then drop it back down on you, not to mention the danger of flying objects. And never try to outrun a tornado in a car. Tornadoes can change direction quickly and toss a car through the air.

Many manufactured home communities have designated emergency shelters where you can find safe refuge from the storm. This may be a community building with a basement or a recreational facility. If necessary, you could go to a nearby site-built home or permanent building with a basement. Regardless of where your safe refuge is, make sure the entire family knows ahead of time. And always give yourself and your family members enough time to get to the shelter safely!

Once inside a shelter or basement, stay away from windows. Wrap yourself in coats, sleeping bags or towels to protect yourself from flying debris. Never go outside if the storm is near.

In hurricane-prone coastal areas, it may be necessary to evacuate your family. Listen closely to local advisories and always obey local authorities. Don't take chances when your life is at stake! Property can always be replaced. Loved ones cannot.
