Entry 11: Protecting Our Investment**

Colleen's manufactured home

Don and I are making a big financial investment in our new manufactured home. That’s why it’s important to protect our retirement home with broad, comprehensive insurance.

While it’s true I work with Foremost from time to time, we also looked at coverages offered by other insurance companies. It didn’t take much time to get quotes from several insurance companies by phone or the Internet. And, it didn’t take much time to realize that all insurance companies are not alike. Coverage and benefits vary from policy to policy and from company to company.

We didn’t choose the policy with the cheapest price tag because we’ve always believed that you get what you pay for. Instead we selected a unique insurance program for AARP members who own a manufactured home. By doing this we join more than 190,000 other members who trust their homes to the AARP Mobile Home Insurance Program from the Foremost Insurance Group of Companies.

This insurance program was specifically designed by Foremost for AARP members. It protects our home and possessions, provides personal liability coverage and gives us peace of mind because of Foremost’s commitment to claim service.

What more could we ask for? Actually we expect a lot and get it with this insurance. For example, we receive a lifetime continuation agreement that means the policy will be renewed by Foremost as long as we pay the premium and meet a few other guidelines.

Foremost’s AARP Mobile Home Insurance Program meets or exceeds our expectations. It provides us with a policy that offers broader coverage than the named-peril policies available from many other insurance companies. We are also getting broad coverage on our personal belongings. Since we’ve collected or inherited many precious items, we appreciate the high level of personal property protection provided with this policy.

Requesting an online insurance estimate from Foremost was easy and fast. I just completed the online form and e-mailed it back to Foremost’s AARP Member Services Department. With all the hassles of organizing the move, it was a pleasant surprise when we received a reply the next day.

I did have some questions and wanted to speak with a “real person” about our manufactured home insurance. By calling a toll-free number I talked with a knowledgeable and helpful Foremost AARP member services agent who answered every question on the spot. No delays like, “I’ll get back to you later, or I’ll have to check it out.” – but simply here are the answers and what else would you like to know? That’s refreshing.

I asked if we have to pay the premium before the policy is issued to us and was told that Foremost will issue our policy and then bill us for the down payment. When we receive the policy the bill will be with it. We can even choose to budget our payments with one, two, four or ten-payments if we want. This flexible method of insurance billing is another one of the many conveniences Don and I appreciate.

After my questions were answered it was my turn to answer a few simple questions about our home and its location. It was as easy as that. The next day we received a detailed manufactured home insurance e-mail estimate. The estimate asked us to review the coverages, deductibles and limits, then call back toll-free to request coverage.

Don and I decided to get comprehensive dwelling coverage for the full value of our manufactured home with a $250.00 deductible. The comprehensive policy is a broader insurance policy because it covers just about any kind of direct, sudden and accidental loss cause – such as fire, wind, hail and water. What this means is that unless our policy says that damage caused by a specific cause is not covered, we ARE covered.

Another important feature in our policy is known as replacement cost coverage. This simply means the policy provides the resources to replace our home, personal belongings and other structures with new items of like kind and quality at current costs subject to the policy limit.

Also included is comprehensive liability coverage that protects us in two important ways. It pays to defend us if a lawsuit is filed against us because someone is accidentally injured while on our property or because of our activities.

Let’s say a guest has an accident either because of something we do or something that happens on our property and we are held legally responsible. This could add up to big bucks - that’s why we chose insurance coverage for up to a $300,000 limit. It’s not too much when we consider everything we own and how much we have to lose.

Although insurance can be confusing to some homeowners, here is the bottom line the way I see it. We chose a manufactured home insurance policy that gives us a feeling of security and peace of mind. We chose an insurance company that specializes in manufactured homes. We chose a company that provides broad insurance protection for our home and belongings. We chose a company that offers fast and fair claim service.

All these things are rolled up into one neat package when we joined the AARP Mobile Home Insurance Program from the Foremost Insurance Group of Companies.
